The Filipino American National Historical Society New Jersey Chapter (FANHS) has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.  Funds will be used for an oral history project focused on Filipino veterans, primarily of the Second World War, who currently reside in New Jersey.  The story of Filipino participation in the Second World War has not been fully documented.  In addition to their contributions to the war effort for the Allies, their story is unique in that Filipino veterans have been denied veterans benefits by the U.S. government.  The aging Filipino veterans who remain represent the last living links to this untold American story.

The enduring march of Bataan 65 years ago might have been the most tragic event in American military history. The enemy showcased the captured prisoners of war. The brutal march passed thru several towns to discourage further resistance.  The prisoners forcefully walked to their new prison in Cabanatuan experiencing inhumane treatment, which was compounded by the Japanese attitude that surrender was the most shameful act of a warrior. The Corregidor, the Rock, fell on May 6 1942 the last bastion of freedom and Christianity in the East.
